How Much Time Do You Have Left?

Have you stopped to consider your life-span lately?  I'm not trying to be morose or bring on a dark mood, but it really is important to ask ourselves these kinds of questions once in a while to make sure that we stay focused on what is truly important.  Now many will say, "Nobody knows when their time is up, so why worry about it?"   I couldn't agree more!  It is not something to worry about, but it is actually something to plan for!

I just got back from a fairly long domestic trip where we invested a lot of time (nearly a month) in our foundation, but intermingled were short jaunts to visit grandchildren and spend valuable time with those we love.  I can tell you that I spent considerable time preparing for nearly every day of that month.  No details were intentionally overlooked or minimized.  From on the road travel schedules to public presentations, we had to consider and plan a ton of minutia.  Sometimes it can get a little overwhelming!  But, I never regret the planning or the execution of the plan, (unless I blow it) because I know the necessary time was taken to make sure we did our best at the time.

Now let me make the obvious comparison to our lives, both present and future.  If, in fact, we spend so much time and effort making sure we plan for all the temporal details of life, would we not spend as much or even more preparing for our eternal plan?  I mean, let's face it, many people spend more time preparing for a ten day vacation than they do their eternity.  Are you one of them?  If so, please listen to me for a minute.

Proverbs 27:1 declares in bold print,

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

If that doesn't cause you to stop and consider your mortality listen to what James, the Lord's brother, said,

...yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring.  What is your life?  For you are a mist that appears for a little time then vanishes.  (Js 4:14)

We make the mistake of thinking that our life is going to go on and on and on, until we say, "I'm done."   Nothing could be farther from the truth.  Death comes to all of us, and it never knocks first.  It comes because it is a reality of life.  It comes because sin has invaded and infected our world and our lives and because of sin, each one of us must face death.  It's that simple.

Now here is the good news.  You don't have to be uncertain or doubtful about where you are headed when your end comes.  Paul the apostle said in Rom 6:23,

The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life.

Jesus provided that gift when He died on the cross for your sin and mine.  He paid your "death debt" for you.  He died in your place so you don't have to suffer separation from God your creator forever.  That is exactly what death means - separation.

How much time do you have left?  It doesn't matter when you are prepared!  Don't guess about eternity and the destination of your never to die soul.  The future is bright no matter when death comes when you are prepared!
